Friday June 8

Llanidloes to Dylife. 23 km. 740m of climbing.

It had rained heavily overnight, but had pretty much stopped by the time we were ready to go. Trudy and I heard nothing from our 2nd floor luxury suite, but the other 4 folks all heard the incessant dripping for a while.

After several days of taking a taxi to start the day, it was kind of nice to just walk out the door and be on our way.  Llanidloes is quite a substantial little town.

We had a bit more elevation today. It seemed we were always going either up or down; we certainly savoured the few flat spots that we had.

A few hours into the walk we came to a large dam and reservoir. Our route took us right down to the base of the dam where there were ruins from an old lead mining operation. Wandered around there for a bit before heading back up, up, up to the top of the dam. The trail/road combos led generally along the edge of the reservoir for quite a while.  The trail had a temporary closure and a reroute which was a bit of a route-finding challenge. It started to rain a bit as we emerged from the trees. Lucky for us the sailing clubhouse was close by and had some picnic tables under shelter. Sounds like a lunch stop to me. There was a rather chatty lady there doing some cleaning, but she found talking with us to be a preferred diversion. Off again and after a time the light rain stopped.

Thanks to Gary for the above 2 pictures showing the "detour".

More ups and down, fields and sheep.  I had estimated an arrival time of about 6, and we reached the Star Inn about 15 minutes early. I’ve had my usual hiking heat rash since day 1.  But instead of getting better, it has spread to my feet and has gotten quite bad around my ankles. By the end of today’s walk each step was quite excruciating. I put ice on it for a while and later soaked them in the tub of cold water. I’m the only one with heat rash, but a few others have sore feet & ankles so the tub was full.

Good dinner again and off to bed. Unless a miracle happens overnight I’ll be taking a taxi tomorrow instead of walking. Grrrr.......
